The 2024 men's U.S. Open golf tournament begins Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2, bringing the world's best players to one of the most unique venues in major golf in the North Carolina Sandhills.
Played atop the domed greens of architect Donald Ross' masterpiece, this will be the fifth time America's national professional championship will be played here, putting it among the elite courses for hosting.
Last season's winner, Wyndham Clark, has struggled in 2024, but world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler again enters a major championship on a high. He held off Collin Morikawa on Sunday to win the Memorial Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. It's his fifth victory so far on the PGA Tour season, including the Masters Tournament in April.
Xander Schauffele, who won last month's PGA Championship for his first major title, tied for eighth last week.
The four-round tournament, which concludes Sunday, began in 1895.

Favorites. Scottie Scheffler is the clear-cut favorite entering the tournament, just as he is in all the tournaments he plays in. Scheffler currently sits at +300 to win it all. Xander Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship in May, and Rory McIlroy, last year's runner-up, are tied for the second-best odds at +1100.

Bryson DeChambeau wins another U.S. Open with a clutch finish to deny Rory McIlroy. PINEHURST, N.C. — Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Open on Sunday for the second time with the best shot of his life for another memorable finish on the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2 — and another heavy dose of heartache for Rory McIlroy.
Bryson DeChambeau won his second career U.S. Open by a single stroke over Rory McIlroy on Sunday. He'll take home a major championship record $4.3 million for his victory.
That means there's also a seriously nice increase in the winner's cut too. This year's U.S. Open champion will surpass the payout received by 2023 champion Wyndham Clark by $700,000, with a $4.3 million total payday — the largest ever for a major champion.
Pinehurst No. 2 is the only golf course to have hosted all five of the USGA's most prestigious events: U.S. Open (1999, 2005, 2014), U.S. Women's Open (2014), U.S. Amateur (1962, 2008, 2019), U.S. Women's Amateur (1989), and U.S. Senior Open (1994).
In 1967, Nicklaus won the U.S. Open for a second time. The tournament was held at Baltusrol, and he broke Hogan's 72-hole record by one shot with a 275 when he birdied the par 5 18th hole. During the four rounds, Nicklaus hit 61 of 72 greens in regulation.
The winner of the US Open tournament is allowed to take the personalized trophy home and display it as part of their trophies and awards collection for one year. They are then required to return the championship trophy to the USGA before the start of the next year's US Open golf tournament.
DeChambeau won his second U.S. Open title on Sunday by getting up-and-down from 55 yards in a bunker — one of the toughest shots in golf — to deliver another unforgettable finish at Pinehurst and a celebration just as raucous as when his hero, Payne Stewart, won with a big par putt in 1999.
The U.S. Open trophy is displayed at the first hole at Pinehurst No. 2 on Sunday, June 16, 2024. Extra transport from RDU, big crowds over the weekend, and preparation for hosting one of the country's biggest golf tournament in the coming years.
Since he won the U.S. Open at Congressional in 2011, McIlroy has seven top 10s in this championship without a victory — it's been more than 100 years since anyone did that well without going home with the trophy.
However, they must return the trophy the following year to be presented to the next winner. Nonetheless, they can ask for a replica of the trophy, which is smaller than the trophy presented to the winner, to take home permanently. Moreover, winners are also awarded the Jack Nicklaus Gold Medal to keep forever.
