Advanced meters—also called smart meters—record electric consumption in 15-minute intervals. They also allow consumers to monitor their electricity usage in real time, empowering them to rethink their energy use and save money. At the same time, advanced meters also act as a sensor, providing information around the reliability of the distribution system, helping Oncor provide more reliable service and, in many cases, identify and resolve problems before a service disruption occurs. The meters also provide electric providers with a platform for developing innovative rate plans that offer customers more options.
