Server Bans[]

A server ban is a type of punishment that restricts a user's access to a particular server. Any user on a server that has a role with permissions to ban a user can do so by either going to their account menu and pressing Ban, right-click the user in the members menu and then pressing Ban, or by typing in a command to make a bot ban a user from the server. Users can also ban users that aren't in the server by typing in a ban command with their user ID and a bot would ban them.

The length of server bans is under the discretion of the server moderators. Most of these bans are permanent but can sometimes be temporary. These bans are indefinite until lifted by a server moderator or bot. Bot commands are commonly used when temporarily banning users from a server.

There are 2 different types of bans:

  • Kick: The user's account is removed from the server, but they can join again if they want to. But this time, it's only by using a valid invite link.
  • Ban: The user's account is removed from the server and both their account and IP address (Internet Protocol) are blocked from joining the server again, to prevent ban circumvention. Any account(s) using the banned user's IP address won't be able to join the server. However, existing accounts under the same IP address will not be automatically kicked from the server. It is possible for a user to bypass a Discord server ban by using an alternate account and a VPN (or different IP address), but doing so is a violation of Discord's ToS, and if it is reported by a member or server administrator, the user may face a permanent ban from the Discord platform.

Platform Bans[]

If a user violates the Discord Terms of Service or the community guidelines, Discord's Trust and Safety Team can ban users. These bans can range from warnings to being permanently banned from the Discord platform.

Ban Level[]

  • Warning: The user receives a DM and an email from Discord Trust and Safety warning them about the violation they committed, and what actions could be used against them if said behavior continues.
  • API Ban: The user is partially banned from accessing Discord's API usually for exceeding their rate limits frequently, e.g. spamming reactions. These bans usually last an hour, but sometimes last longer.
  • Quarantine: The user is banned from messaging or joining new servers but will keep their servers. If they want their account restored, they can contact Discord's support.
  • Temporary Ban: The user is temporarily banned from accessing Discord. These bans can last up to a year.
  • Account Termination: The user's account gets disabled and then deleted later. (Usually after 30 days). They are allowed to make a new account. [1]
  • Permanent Ban: The user is permanently banned from Discord, and if that user had a phone number added to their account, their phone number is permanently blacklisted from being used on any other account and a phone verification requirement will be set on the user's IP address. They are not allowed to use Discord ever again.

Discord's Warning System[]

On October 19, 2023, Discord unveiled a warning system for all accounts. When a user receives a violation, Discord will notify the user about the violation they committed and what actions were taken against them. The violation will expire at a given date, with duration depending on the severity of the violation. Their account status changes based on the severity of the violation, in which it is possible for users to go from an all-good status to a suspended status, but this is most common for serious violations.

* All Good! - The user has no active violations and has full access to Discord.
* Limited - The user has one active violation, and some Discord features are temporarily disabled until that violation expires.
* Very Limited - The user has one or more active violations, and more Discord features are temporarily disabled for a longer time.
* At Risk - The user has one or more active violations, and more features are limited. If they receive one more violation before all of the active violations that led up to this status expires, the user's account will be permanently disabled.
* Suspended - The user no longer has access to Discord due to severe or repeated violations. Their Discord account is permanently disabled and will then be deleted after 30 days.
