Choke Operation | Polaris Power EN-CA (2024)

When an engine starts, it needs a rich fuel-to-air mixture. Chokes are designed to close off or "choke" the air supply in order to provide the proper ratio of fuel to air.Anengine needs more air as it warms up,so the choke needs to open to allow more air.

With a manual choke, you will need to close and open the choke yourself when starting your engine, while anelectric choke will control the air supply itself when the engine is started.

P5500 and P6500 Generators
The two largest Polaris Power generators come equipped with a manual choke (shown below) located on the front of the generator above the air filter. The initial position is the OFF/OPEN position.Turn the choke to the left for the ON/CLOSED position. More information can be found in the Owner's Manual.

Leave the choke in the OFF/OPEN position when starting or restarting a warm engine.

P3200iE Generator
The P3200iE generator comes equipped with an electric choke. When starting eithera cold or warm engine, simply follow the standard start and usage procedures found in your Owner's Manual.

P2000i Generator

FAQs

What does a power choke do? ›

A power choke is connected between the mains supply and the inverter. It smoothes current peaks caused by the current consumption of the inverter. The waveform of the line current approaches back to the sinusoid.

What is the choke operation? ›

The choke, a butterfly valve, reduces the intake of air and allows a fuel-rich charge to be drawn into the cylinders when a cold engine is started. As the engine warms up, the choke is gradually opened either by hand or automatically by heat- and engine-speed-responsive…

Do you run choke open or closed? ›

Pulling the choke lever provides proper fuel-starting mixture when the engine is cold. When attempting to start a cold engine, pull the choke lever outward to close. Slowly return the choke to the open position as the engine warms. Leave the choke in the OFF/OPEN position when starting or restarting a warm engine.

How long can you run an engine on choke? ›

We do not recommend that any type of outdoor power equipment be operated after initial warm-up and with the choke control outside of the normal run position for longer than 5 minutes. Some engines utilize a manual fuel primer bulb to enrich the ratio of fuel in the fuel air mixture for initial engine starting.
