Can police tell you who reported you? ›

In general in the US you have no legal right to know. As I said above this can vary by state. If you are later charged with a crime and prosecuted you have a right to confront all witnesses against you. If the person who made the initial report is a witness for the prosecution then you'll know.

Request a copy of a police report online

All report requests must be reviewed for eligibility for release and may take up to 10 business days to process. Certain reports may not be available for release because the investigation is still ongoing, or because release of the report is restricted by law.

One common explanation for why cops are called 12 is that it comes from police radio codes. In some jurisdictions, police officers use radio codes to communicate. The code "10-12" is often used to signify that a law enforcement officer is present and in need of assistance.

Reporting helps protect others. While agencies can't always track down perpetrators of crimes against scammers, they can utilize the information gathered to record patterns of abuse which may lead to action being taken against a company or industry.

If you have fallen victim to a scam, your local police department should be able to help along with the resources mentioned above. It is generally best to file a police report on a scammer, reach out to your bank, and file a complaint with the appropriate federal agency as soon as possible after you have been scammed.

If you encounter suspicious offers for CPNs or other credit-related scams, be sure to report them to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and your state attorney general's office. You can validate SSN/CPN numbers for free through US SSA.

You will have to give your name if there is a police report made. If you simply call the police to report the issue, you do not. However, calls to 911 can locate the source of a call. That's a good thing because many, many times, people in trouble dial 911 but can't give any information.

Once you have reported a crime, the police will investigate it. To do this, they will need to get information from you. They may call or stop by your home, they might ask you to come to the police station, or they may just speak to you at the scene of the crime.

If you call the police, you should expect that someone will be arrested. Police officers are not social workers, counselors or cab drivers. An officer's primary job is to arrest suspects.

Penal Code 632 does not apply to eavesdropping by law enforcement personnel: Police can legally “listen in” on private conversations without the parties' consent. In addition, any evidence police obtain this way is admissible in court.
