The term "Laura Syndrome" is based on the 1944 Noir Film Laura.
A police detective falls in love with the woman whose murder he is investigating.
Through the testimony of Laura's friends and reading her letters and diary, the protagonist Detective McPherson becomes obsessed with her – so much so that his colleague Lydecker accuses him of falling in love with the dead woman.Another example exist in Sci-Fi TV Show The Expanse (2015-2022).
In the first season, one of the main characters is a hard-boiled detective named Joseph Miller, who developed a love-interest in the missing heiress Julie Mao after watching all of her video messages and learning many things about her throughout his investigation.Maybe the movie Sleepless in Seattle (1993) is also worth mentioning as an example.
But the Leading Lady and Man actually meet each other two times for a very brief moment before they properly introduce themselves at the end of the movie.
And the behavior of the female protagonist can be compared to a creepy stalker from an objective POV.Can you imagine falling in love with a stranger you never had contact with?
You only become attracted to them by reading and hearing many positive things about them.....
If yes, I theorize you would be in love with the idea of a person.Now that I think about it, this sounds really problematic and could be some sort of
Parasocial Relationship.
"Parasocial relationships are one-sided relationships, where one person extends emotional energy, interest and time, and the other party, the persona, is completely unaware of the other's existence. Parasocial relationships are most common with celebrities, organizations (such as sports teams) or television stars."
However, the protagonist in Laura and The Expanse are not obsessive crazed toxic fans or possessive delusional stalkers, they are investigators who initially doing their job...So is that basically just Stalker Obsession?
