  1. #1 Best Public High Schools in North CarolinaNorth Carolina School of Science and MathematicsDurham, NC·Public School·11-12·Rating 4.45 out of 5 181 reviewsSenior: NCSSM is perfect for students that do as the motto states: those who "accept the greater challenge." It is overwhelming and difficult-- every year, 300 juniors from across North Carolina are pulled from their home schools and live residentially, away from their parents and homes, with students with incredibly diverse backgrounds. You learn, in addition to your coursework, how to coexist. You learn about the vastly different experiences of your peers and intellectual equals (my closest friends are from rural areas, whereas I am from suburbian purgatory). You learn to take care of yourself alongside your academics. But it is worth it, if you make it in. You walk out with so much respect and love for the family of peers you find. Your mind opens, your viewpoints change. This is a life-changing experience, and it comes with its drawbacks and difficulties. But it is, forever and always, worth it to me because of the new way I see the world now. Go Unicorns (and Morganton Dragons!)... As a parent of multiple children, we have seen changes but all have been welcomed and transitioned well. The institution sets an extremely high bar academically but balances things with ample opportunities, in STEM, fine arts, and athletics. The students are very engaged and take ownership in what they do. Additionally, the faculty and teachers thoroughly enjoy teaching and providing ample opportunity for instruction and assistance after classroom hours if supplemental guidance is needed. I have consistently been challenged through rigorous courses in math and science, but always had the opportunity to improve through my teachers’ dedication to me and my understanding of the material. The multi-break schedule every day allows for me to catch my breath in a day that may be very busy with tests and learning, but also provide opportunities of time to meet with teachers, asking any questions I have about current or upcoming topics.Ravenscroft also allows for students to make an impact on the school community through the hundreds of clubs and organizations present. As a current member of the sustainability committee, I have been able to work with teachers and administration to implement a school wide recycling initiative to once again recycle, along with collecting food scraps from lunches to donate to local farms, making sure it does not go to waste.... I was welcomed in by the students and faculty with warm and open hands. Throughout the years I was there, a vast network of clubs and activities were set up. My class was the first graduating class from Green Level so there were things that the staff learned from us to improve the experience of other incoming students. I was on the varsity tennis and basketball team through my years there for which I had feedback that hopefully reflected in change. Our basketball team went through coach changes- which do happen- but you never expect it to happen at the end of the first year of the school's operation. My tennis team's coach was the parent of one of the athletes on the team and I think that caused an imbalance on the team when a player that was better than their child got a spot on the team. Overall, I suggested that we have unbiased coaches so that this incident would not happen again.... I have watched her thrive and find herself. She has become more confident, independent and is able to problem solve and navigate the balance of school, dance/athletics, living in a dorm, doing laundry, managing friendships/living with a roommate. She is challenged academically but has the opportunity to stretch herself. She has grown so much in the last two years due to leadership opportunities and vast list of activities and organizations available to her on campus. Her advisor worked with her personally to develop a strategic plan for her studies and how to reach her college goals. I also find our daily conversations are about more meaningful things like the subjects she is studying or what she is learning and experiencing verses. Since those early years, we have had our 1st daughter graduate and younger one set to this upcoming school year. Not only has CGHS prepared our oldest for college academically, through leadership activities, sports, and clubs, she was more than prepared socially to continue to build on the foundation of service and friendship at college through her daily and sorority life. Our daughter looked for a college that would compliment her experience at CGHS where relationships with peers, older mentors, teachers, and administrators were both valued and necessary. 20. #62 Best Public High Schools in North CarolinaTMSA Triangle - Triangle Math and Science AcademyCary, NC·Public School·K-12·Rating 3.64 out of 5 53 reviewsJunior: Triangle math and science academy is a very solid charter school in the triangle area and deserves to be considered if you are a student looking to peruse an education in business, engineering, mathematics, or any other STEM subject. The school is great for preparing students for college and their careers by offering college level CTE courses from PLTW. If you are interested in DECA or FBLA, triangle math and science boasts top chapters in both of those competitions. The main waypoint of this school is its lack of resources and facilities as it is not even done being built as of right now. This can mostly be attributed to its small size which gives it the advantage of allowing every student to get to know everyone else and feel more at home compared to schools with 2,000+ students. Most of all however I love the way that TMSA allows its students to take ownership of what they do both in their classes, their clubs, and other programs such as Leader In Me.... Though, in my opinion, CMA is a great choice for motivated students, specifically those with professional interests in the medical field! CMA does a great job ensuring you're caught up with your general education requirements for graduation, while heavily implementing a healthcare curriculum into your schedule with courses like Health Science, Foundations of Nursing, and EMT! CMA is also heavily encouraging students to take college coursework at our local community college, Durham Tech! They even provide transportation to and from the college. The scrubs that we wear daily as a uniform are a fun touch as well! Students who aren't serious about their education, or medicine may find CMA's curriculum uninteresting, or unreasonably challenging, but that's a reflection of their own aspirations! 23. #72 Best Public High Schools in North CarolinaDurham School of the ArtsDurham Public Schools, NC·6-12·Rating 3.92 out of 5 283 reviewsSenior: I’ve been at DSA since the sixth grade. DSA held middle and high school. My best experiences at DSA were having different types of art classes every year. These included theatre class, visual arts, photography, band, orchestra, chorus and more. We had two pep rallies every year and the whole school would gather at the main gym and different art courses would showcase their talents. Such as the K-pop club, dance class, the basketball team, etc. Winter showcases were the best too! My orchestra class would play a piece in front of all high schoolers (middle schoolers had their own winter showcase). DSA was a school of diversity and held a variety of arts. My worst experience at DSA was seventh grade when a gas leak explosion occurred next to the middle school building on April 10, 2019. However, the education we all received/are receiving is above the standard for public schools. I know I am set for college and a vast majority of my classmates are too. The variety of teachers keeps students on their toes and some are definitely more liked than others. But they all care about the students in different ways and looking back I can see this. I've learned a lot throughout my 3 years at Athens Drive and have always been impressed with the wide variety of courses that are available to be taken including many APs, pretty much every honors and academic course you can think of, and a ton of super fun electives with awesome teachers. I've been involved and on the board of multiple clubs like the Student Government and Key Club as well as being the captain of the Track and Cross Country teams which are all tight-knit groups, almost like a family.
