There are two ways to start a Traeger: with an open lid or with a closed lid. You can easily tell which method you should use based on the type of controller you have. Most grills require a closed-lid startup. However, if you have a grill without WiFIRE that also has a small pin hole next to the screen, use the open-lid procedure.
Closed-Lid Startup
Closed-lid startups are effortless:
When ready to cook, ensure all your internal grill components (heat baffle, drip tray, grill grates) are inside the grill.
Plug in and turn on your grill.
Set your Traeger grill directly to the desired temperature and preheat with the lid closed for approximately 15 minutes.
Open-Lid Startup
If your grill requires an open-lid start-up, follow these steps below:
When ready to cook, ensure all your internal grill components (heat baffle, drip tray, grill grates) are inside the grill.
Set your Traeger grill to the SMOKE setting with the lid open. You will hear the fan running.
Wait for the fire to ignite and establish, roughly 5 minutes, give or take.
You should hear a difference in sound from just the fan to hearing a flame going.
If you want to cook at high temperatures (325ºF +), skip to step.
Once the flame is going and the fire has been established, wait for an additional 5-10 with the lid remaining open.
Close the lid.
Increase to the desired temperature and preheat for approximately 10-15 minutes.
When it comes to igniting and preheating your grill, "set it and forget it." Your new Timberline and Ironwood grill is designed to ignite and preheat with the lid closed.
Make sure the grill is plugged into a working outlet, the power switch is in the ON position, and you have taken the controller out of standby. You can take the grill out of standby mode by pressing the standby button. If your controller doesn't have a standby button on the controller, press the controller knob.
If your Traeger grill fails to start, the following possible causes are a tripped GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter) on the outlet, a bad power outlet, or a faulty extension cord. Another probable cause is a blown fuse on the back of the controller or a break in the power cord.

The heat doesn't build up and intensify the way it would if the lid was down. Thin pork chops, shrimp, and burgers tend to cook quickly. Leaving the grill lid up will slow the cooking process by reducing the temperature around the meat. For thicker cuts, you want to close the lid to keep the temperature high and even.
Plug in your grill and flip the Power Switch located on the front of the controller to the ON position. Set the temperature dial to SMOKE. You will hear the fan running. Within roughly 5 minutes you will hear the fire establish.
Super Smoke is a special mode that allows you to increase the amount of smoke in the Traeger at temperature of 225°F or lower. How it works: When you set your grill to Super Smoke—which is as easy as pressing a button on the grill's control panel or app—the fan inside the grill modulates differently.
