Presidents Day is a federal holiday observed on every third Monday in February, and most federal offices are closed.
Here’s what you need to know regarding the evolution of the federal holiday and whether or not others have to work on the holiday.
When did Presidents Day become a holiday?
Presidents Day was first celebrated on Feb. 22, 1800, a year after President George Washington’s death.
However, it wasn’t a federal holiday until the 1870s when President Rutherford B. Hayes signed the measure into law, according to History.com.
Since then, the holiday included February birthdays of other presidents, including Presidents Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Harrison and Ronald Reagan.
In 1960, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act combined these presidents’ birthdays together and shifted most other federal holidays to Mondays permanently in a move to combat federal employee absenteeism.
Do people get the day off from work on Presidents Day?
This year, Presidents Day falls on Feb. 19, 2024. It is a holiday for most federal workers, and all banks, K-12 schools and non-essential government offices are closed on the holiday.
According to the Office of Personnel Management, those people in the categories listed above who do have to work on the holiday are entitled to “holiday premium pay,” or twice their normal pay rate.
However, not everyone is off on Presidents Day.
Federal law doesn’t require state governments and the private sector to close on federal holidays, so it is up to the discretion of the state government or private sector office to decide whether to close on Presidents Day. Typically, those who are not federal employees do not have off of work. Most non-federal companies have a long stretch between holiday days off after Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated in mid-January and Memorial Day is celebrated at the end of May.
