Our founder Steven Waldman and government advertising policy manager Lori Henson found that about 83% of the counties that have no source of local news or are at risk of becoming news deserts voted Republican in 2020.Their analysis used data from Medill’s 2023 State of Local News Report along with voting patterns. The bottom line? Conservative counties are more vulnerable to losing local news.“Strengthening local news would have broad civic benefits that would make it easier for people to address their problems, more likely they understand their neighbors, and more inclined to think their voices are being heard. It could lead to happier, healthier communities, whether red, purple or blue.”Read more at Poynter Institute: https://lnkd.in/gcbZCJj5Learn more about the State of Local News Report at Medill Local News Initiative: https://lnkd.in/d-YnU8rK#LocalNews #NewsDesert #Republican #CivicEngagement #Journalism #RebuildLocalNews

Thousands of newspapers and tens of thousands of journalism jobs have been lost in the last two decades. That pace continues: The Los Angeles Times slashed its staff by 20 percent in January. Each week, two to three small newspapers fold. It's estimated that half of U.S. counties have no access or limited access to local news sources, creating news deserts with far-reaching consequences.Living in a new desert means the loss of coverage that has enriched communities with local features for generations. But when reporters no longer show up to municipal and county meetings or cover local elections, residents lose their common source of trusted information about their government. That threatens democracy. How do we begin to counter this threat? Chris Mills Rodrigo at the Institute for Policy Studies explores some ideas. This interesting study by Erik Peterson and Josh McCrain concludes that a long-held belief that coverage of local elections increases local news readership is false. It goes against the argument that having a local news source increases civic engagement, like voting, and decreases partisanship. "Even when focusing on close mayoral elections or races in years without federal elections, we fail to find beneficial changes in the audiences of local media outlets covering mayoral elections in their community." Even providing free newspaper subscriptions does not increase local news use. I guess the takeaway is you have to lure readers with all sorts of news - about culture, arts, food, sports, etc - and hope they also read the local political coverage. Readers want to be invested in ALL parts of their community, not just who runs the city. #localnews https://lnkd.in/gRfpyDQr

📉🗞️ A recent study reveals a startling disinterest in local news, with less than 2% of 2,529 people accepting a free subscription to their local newspapers, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Philadelphia Inquirer. The study highlights the challenge of rekindling interest in local journalism in an era dominated by national media narratives. 🤔 #LocalNews #MediaIndustry #CommunityEngagementhttps://lnkd.in/gS_gSd4A
