How to Unlock Farming inMy Time at Sandrock

You have to complete a series of three Missions before you can unlock My Time at Sandrock Farming:

1. The Old Man and the Tree
2. Moisture Farm Blues
3. The Grass is Greener

Once these Missions are complete, you'll be able to activate a Desert Planting Toolkit which permanently grants you the ability to farm.

How to Activate Farming Mode

Once you've used the Desert Planting Toolkit, you can unlock Planting Mode by holding Tab and selecting the bottom-right icon while at home.

How My Time at SandrockFarming Works

My Time at Sandrock Farming is a multi-step process; fortunately, it's fairly easy to follow.

1. Go into Planting Mode.
2. Place a Straw Grid. Some plants (such as trees) may require more than one Straw Grid.
3. Plant your seed.
4. Water the plot(s).
5. (Optional) Fertilize the plots.
6. Wait for them to grow, watering them again as needed.
   • A word of warning: a crop will die if you wait too long to water it after it dries out!
7. Harvest the crop.
   • If it's a one-time harvest, you'll have to place another Straw Grid and begin the process again.
   • If it's a tree, you can harvest the fruit again every few days depending on the plant.

Best Crop to Farm inMy Time at Sandrock

The best crop to Farm in My Time at Sandrock is either the Coffee Tea Tree or the Chestnut -- these trees take longer than average to grow, but they'll continue to produce crops multiple times after they've grown.

Of course, the best crop depends on your situation. If you want to experiment with Cooking (or you're looking to cook a particular dish), a different crop may be a better choice.

My Time at Sandrock Farming With Biocrust

After Trudy returns to Sandrock, you'll need to advance the plot and unlock the One Small Step for Sandrockers quest. In the course of the quest you'll make an Intermediate Planting Kit which will now allow you to farm using Biocrust. A small amount of Biocrust is also given to you as part of the mission but if you want to farm extensively with it, you'll need to make your own.

My Time at Sandrock How to Get Biocrust

You can make your own Biocrust in the game by repeatedly farming the same plots of land and leveling up the soil. The information box on the bottom left side of the screen will tell you what level your soil is at and has a progress bar for when you will reach the next level. Soil turns into Biocrust at level 4 and then no longer requires straw grids to farm. Different crops affect the soil differently, and you'll need to repeatedly plant in the same squares to level them up.

Once created, Biocrust can also be removed from the ground and sold or moved. Zeke will occasionally ask for Biocrust on the commissions board.
