What if you get all 265 questions on NCLEX? ›

If a student got all 265 questions, that would mean they are really straddling the competency line. The NCLEX algorithm is complicated, but it's a very smart, adaptive test. After you get past 75 questions, once it determines whether you're above passing or below passing, it will shut off.

We recommend that you complete about 2,800 practice questions before your exam. If you are giving yourself a month to study, that means that you would be doing about 100 NCLEX practice questions per day.

3 | NCLEX Examination Question Types

The NCLEX-RN consists of 74-145 questions. This includes 15 pre-test questions that do not count toward test takers' scores. The NCLEX-PN consists of 85-205 questions, including 25 non-scored questions.

For examinees taking the NCLEX-RN, at least 75 questions must be answered.

You can miss up to 85 questions before officially passing the NCLEX exam. But it's important to note that pass and fail scores are more based on the NCLEX's confidence interval. You technically pass when correctly answering enough questions to remain above the passing line with a 95% confidence interval.

If the last question is below the level of difficulty needed to pass, the candidate fails. If the last question is above the level of difficulty needed to pass, the candidate passes.

Recommended study times may vary depending upon the level of preparation needed and can range anywhere from four to twelve weeks or more. Although this article provides a guide to studying for the NCLEX in one month, it is highly recommended you allocate more than just four weeks to prepare for your exam.

If you are committed to studying every day of your 90-day study plan, you will need to work through at least 25 NCLEX-RN practice questions per day.

If you reach the minimum 75 questions and the computer program is able to determine with 95% accuracy that you have either passed or failed, the test will end there. If it is not 95% certain of your results, you will continue to see questions until it is certain or until you reach the maximum of 145 questions.

The NCLEX is a standardized exam and is the same type of test for everyone in the country. No state has a “harder” exam than another state.

What are the Pass/Fail Rules? The CAT algorithm determines whether you pass or fail based on one of the following three rules: the 95% Confidence Interval Rule, Maximum-Length Exam Rule, or the Run-out-of-time (ROOT) Rule.

The Odds of Passing NCLEX with All (145) Questions

If you're doing really well, you could pass in 75 questions. But if you're doing really poorly, you could fail in 75. And so on… Just because you get asked the maximum number of questions on NCLEX does not mean you've failed the exam.

I know that you can pass whether you have 75 questions, 150 questions, or 265 questions. In order to pass, the computer will stop when it has determined with 95 % accuracy that you have demonstrated minimum nursing competency-the level with which you need to get to to pass.

Since the exam is adaptive, answering all 145 items does not mean you failed the exam; the computer took longer to determine your ability. Based on the computer adaptive principle, the exam platform can shut off before the 145 questions if it determines your nursing ability to be superb.

When your ability is very close to the passing standard, the computer continues to give you items until the maximum number of items is reached. At this point, the computer disregards the 95% confidence rule and decides whether you pass or fail by your final ability estimate.

The highest number of questions on the NCLEX is 145, while the minimum is 75. If you perform well, you could pass 75 questions. However, if you perform poorly, you could fail with 75 questions. And so on.

The best way to confirm you passed is by getting your test results. Although the questions you get (or the number of questions) during your test might offer clues, it's unfortunately impossible to know if you passed right away.
