Licensing Centers

InLicensing Centers, we are processinglicense transactionsonly. Appointments are required for:

  • First-time license/permit (REAL ID or standard). If available, you can take your knowledge test at your permit appointment.
  • Upgrade your class D license to a CDL
  • Knowledge test for auto, CDL or motorcycle.
  • Out-of-state transfer.
  • Renewal of license/ID, CDL, TVRs (temporary visa restricted licenses), or any other expiring license.
    • You can renew online
    • You can make a renewal appointment starting 3 months prior to your expiration date.
      • You can get a REAL ID at any renewal appointment.
  • Upgrade to REAL ID

You do not need an appointment for any of the following, which can be done on a walk-in basis at any Licensing Center.

  • Name change
  • Gender marker change
  • Probationary license (after passing road test)
  • Disability placard (initial or renewal)
  • License plate return (most locations have a drop box)

License/ID replacements, or changes of address can be done online at NJMVC.gov.

Vehicle Centers

InVehicle Centers, we are processingvehicle transactionsonly. Appointments are required for:

  • Registration/title transfer for private sale of a new vehicle, boat or trailer
  • New registration/title
  • Salvage title
  • License plate transfer or replacement
  • Replacement or duplicate title.
  • Renewal of registration.
    • You can make a renewal appointment starting 3 months prior to your expiration date.
    • You can also renew online.

You do not need an appointment for the following, which can be done on a walk-in basis at any Vehicle Center.

  • Disability placard (initial or renewal)
  • License plate return (most locations have a drop box).

Road Test Facilities

A road test may be taken once the knowledge and vision tests are successfully completed, at a driver testing center.

An appointment is needed to take a road test. You may schedule an appointment online; or in person at a driver testing center.
Note: Commercial Driver License (CDL) road tests can only be scheduled in-person at aDriver Testing Center.

Regional Service Centers

A customer may“walk-in”to one of our six Regional Service Centers (Eatontown, Newark, Paterson, Trenton, Wayne, or West Deptford) to

  • get information regarding driving records, “points” for driving violations, and insurance surcharges
  • resolve outstanding court suspensions and restore driving privileges
  • pay restoration, surcharge, dishonored check, and program fees
  • review registration records and certified driver abstracts (five-year certified driving records); and other certified documents.

A customer will require a“driver conference”, or scheduled service appointment, when more assistance is required to resolve an issue. This includes:

  • persons with a proposed suspension of driving and/or vehicle registration privileges
  • persons who claim to be victims of identity theft, misuse, or fraud
  • drivers with cases in need of a thorough official record review and decision
  • those who require an identification verification hearing.

Appointments may be scheduled by visiting any Regional Service Center.

Saturday hours are not available for these services.

How many questions are on the NJMVC test? ›

The New Jersey MVC permit test has 50 multiple-choice questions. A score of 80% or higher will be needed to pass and get your permit. Once you have passed your written exam and have your permit, you'll be required to display two decals on your vehicle: one each on your front, and back license plates.

If the student fails the road test, they must wait two weeks to retake the test. However, if they fail 3 or more times, there must be a 6-month period before taking the test again. If the test is successfully completed, they are granted a probationary license.

The NJ Road Test is not a difficult exam. It must be said that the range of difficulty a student has is mostly, if not entirely based on their behind-the-wheel experience. The behind the wheel experience a student has is a much different experience than taking the New Jersey Written exam.
