Parenting, or breeding, is a skill available in the Virtual Villagers series that allow villagers to populate the village. This skill is vital to prevent the tribe from dying out. The skill can be built immediately in games 1-3, but games 4 and 5 require the love shack to be built first.

Reproducing[]
Reproducing is simple. Drag any male villager onto any female villager (or vice-versa) - but both villagers must be at least 18 years old. The "going indoors" action will appear upon successfully dragging them together. Afterwards, one of these messages will appear:
The villager improved at breeding. The villager wasn't successful this time.
If the first message is received, only the villager that was dragged will receive breeding experience, and the couple will move to the Love Shack to try for a baby.
If attempting to reproduce when both villagers are the same sex, the village's food supply is less than 400, or one villager is under 18 years old, the following messages will appear:
These villagers are both the same gender. They're too hungry to think about this! This villager is still too young!
When food is below 400, it is still possible to reproduce, though multiple attempts are needed until the "going indoors" action appears.
Female villagers over 50 years old can no longer produce a baby (except in VV1, where they are permanently fertile during adulthood), but can continue increasing their parenting skill by "going indoors." Male villagers can reproduce with eligible female villagers from age 18 until death.
Breeding Skill[]
Once the villagers exit the Love Shack, the female may come out with a child. Multiple attempts may be needed, which may also improve the villagers breeding (VV1) or parenting (VV2-5) skill. However, once males gain enough breeding skill, they will attempt to have children with any villager of the opposite sex without the player's interference. As such, it is not recommended to improve the men's breeding skill until later in the game, as all of the female villagers may be nursing children.
Fertility and Technologies[]
The village's fertility technology may also be enhanced with tech points in the "technologies" section, which will improve the chance of villagers having children, and at higher levels, allows villagers to have twins and triplets (it is not recommended to try for multiple births until at least one hut has been completely built to increase the population cap). The game begins with fertility technology at Level 1, with two unlockable levels.
Villagers who have breeding as their main skill will also benefit from improvements in Medicine technology, as it also increases the fertility rate.
Nursing[]
After successfully having a baby, the female villager will have the responsibility of caring for their newborn(s), and will not be able to perform any activities besides nursing until they reach two years old. Male villagers do not nurse children. In Virtual Villagers 5: New Believers however, a male villager is capable of nursing a child in one specific circ*mstance (see trivia).
Children will sometimes inherit a slight amount of skill from their parents once they are able to walk about on their own. Children's appearance will sometimes match one of the parents, but not always.
Trivia[]
- Players don't have to wait until the two villagers go inside the love shack to see if they successfully reproduced - the population count will rise as soon as one is dragged to the other villager if successful.
- InVirtual Villagers 4: The Tree of Life, it is possible to select all male or female villagers, ending the game prematurely when they all succumb to old age. This can be avoided in the fifth game by converting aheathensof the opposite gender.
- In Virtual Villagers 5: New Believers, there is an extra puzzle with a Heathen Mommywho may be a Daddy instead. This is the only case of a male villager caring for a child.
