Professional governance has several key attributes, including responsibility, professional commitment, and collateral relationships and decision-making, each of which is pivotal to having autonomy in practice and the ability to achieve exemplary empirical outcomes¹.

Professional governance provides the structural framework for partnership across the clinical continuum, with organizational leadership, and with the clinical teams that collaborate to advance the health of individuals and communities.

Moreover, health systems governance plays a crucial role in promoting equity and social justice in healthcare. It strives to ensure that the healthcare system is responsive to the needs of all members of society, regardless of their socioeconomic status, ethnicity, culture, gender or other factors.

The critical concept of nursing shared governance is shared decision making between the bedside nurses and nurse leaders, which includes areas such as resources, nursing research/evidence-based practice projects, new equipment purchases, and staffing.

Clinical governance is the system through which NHS organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which clinical excellence will flourish (Department of Health).

Professional governance, NOT a synonym for shared governance, encompasses a continuum from traditional to shared to self governance. In 1994, Hess further promoted the phrase by creating and copyrighting The Index of Professional Governance and The Index of Professional Nursing Governance.

Governance encompasses the system by which an organisation is controlled and operates, and the mechanisms by which it, and its people, are held to account. Ethics, risk management, compliance and administration are all elements of governance.

Here is a practical example of this principle: The parent board of a health system establishes the system goal of reducing the hospital severity-adjusted mortality rate by 20% by a specific date two years in the future.
