How does the Petco Love Lost work? ›

Our database includes pets reported by individuals as well as thousands of shelter partners across the country. By uploading a photo of your lost or found pet and reporting it in our system, you make that pet visible to pet parents searching for their pet – making happy pet reunions just a few clicks away.

This means you will likely be reunited with your furry friend soon after they go missing. However, after 24 hours, the chances drop to around 60%. This may seem like a big drop, but remember, it still means you're more likely to find your dog than not!

Call veterinarians in the area. They can scan pets for microchips, and some veterinarians take in lost pets in their communities. Visit all shelters in the area; use Petfinder and Google to find them. Ask animal services and every shelter or rescue group you visit where lost pets are taken.

Practice your own culturally significant expression of grief, like creating an ofrenda. Write about your feelings, or write a letter to your pet about all the things you'd like to say to them or how you'd have liked to spend your last day with them. Write an obituary for your pet.
