Why did GM leave Janesville, WI? ›

Decommissioning. In 2008, fuel prices, the related slow sales of SUVs, and the economy resulted in GM cutting back full-time production at the Janesville plant to a single shift. Combined with an ongoing employee buy-out program, layoffs totaled around 750 jobs in July 2008.

Because Janesville has some 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of parkland, it has been given the nickname “Wisconsin's Park Place.” The city was the birthplace (1862) of Carrie Jacobs Bond, a composer of sentimental songs, and it was where she wrote one of her most popular songs, “I Love You Truly.” Inc. 1853.

In its heyday a half-century ago, the Janesville Assembly Plant boasted 7,000 workers.

The entire site was purchased in 2017 by Commercial Development Company, which specializes in brownfield redevelopment. If it goes forward, Lahner said this would be the single largest investment in the city's history, setting the future course for the former GM site, the south side, and the city as a whole.

Janesville's fortunes changed in 1918-'19 when General Motors (GM) purchased the Janesville Machine Company, a farm implement maker. GM then moved the Samson Tractor factory to the city, and Janesville began making tractors. Eventually GM switched to building Chevrolet automobiles until 2008, when the plant closed.
