Spoors Heating and AC (2024)

On its surface, the idea of closing AC vents in an unused room might make sense. Most people think that by closing a vent, air is then diverted to other open vents, helping to cool off occupied rooms faster. However, that's not quite the way it works. In fact, closing any vents connected to your HVAC system could actually cause a whole list of problems. Read on to find out why closing your vents is a bad idea and what you should be doing instead.

Spoor's Heating & Air Conditioning offers AC services to help keep you the right temperature throughout the year. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Causes Temperature & Pressure Imbalance

Closing the vents in one room will make that room hotter than the rest of the home, which can seep through walls and flooring, actually making the rooms around it warmer as well. The air pressure in a room with closed vents will also decrease, meaning that air from the outside will have an easier time funneling through cracks and crevices around windows, doorways, or even in the foundation of that room. This imbalance can cause your AC unit to work harder, limiting its effectiveness.

Limits Airflow

Contrary to what most people think, closing the vents in a room doesn't divert that air to other rooms. What's actually happening is that air will leak from the ductwork, sending cool air into areas such as interior walls and attic spaces. This also makes it so that the air conditioning unit actually has to work harder and may even cause components to expire early, necessitating expensive and avoidable repairs.

Reduces Energy Efficiency

Because the air conditioning unit doesn't know whether or not vents are closed, it will continue to run until the temperature of your home meets the setting requirement. Even if the thermometer for the AC unit isn't in that room, the air that would have gone to that room is now being wasted through duct leaks, which may result in increased utility costs and wasted energy.

May Cause Mold Growth

Proper airflow throughout your home is important to stamp out mold growth. When air from your HVAC unit flows through the rooms of your home, it's helping to disperse moisture which is what mold and mildew need to thrive. A closed vent in an unused room can cause mold and mildew growth. Worse yet, those spores can then make their way into other parts of the house since the room isn't sealed airtight.

How To Actually Increase Airflow

Since ductwork is one of the biggest culprits in air loss, taking them out of the equation entirely is often a great option. Ductless mini splits allow homeowners to have direct control of temperature zones without the need for ducts. These types of units can even end up saving you money in the long run. Also, proper maintenance of any HVAC unit is a must. Even if just one component is out of whack, it can greatly reduce the efficiency of the whole thing.

Does a furnace do heat and AC? ›

Essentially, a heat pump can heat and cool, while an air conditioner can only cool, and a furnace can only provide heat. These units are frequently paired together to make a complete temperature control system for your home, and where you live often determines which system is best for you.

How does AC heat and cool? ›

A fan blows indoor air across the cold evaporator coil where the heat inside the home is absorbed into the refrigerant. The cooled air is then circulated throughout the home while the heated evaporated gas is sent back outside to the compressor.

How to balance heat in a two story house in winter one thermostat? ›

Winter Thermostat Settings

Set the first floor's thermostat to your desired temperature, and then decrease the temperature setting on your thermostats by two degrees as you go up. Warm air on the first floor will rise and make the upper floors more comfortable.

Is HVAC math hard? ›

HVAC Technicians need to be able to do some basic calculations to determine the amount of refrigerant to use in a system, translate a blueprint design, and understand the amount of electricity that a system needs. You don't have to be a mathematician, but you should feel comfortable with basic algebra.

What is the number one problem with HVAC systems? ›

Problem 1: Dirty Filters

One of the most common HVAC problems that people face is the presence of dirty filters. Filters are extremely important in keeping the circulating air clean. Filters are able to catch pollen, filter out particles in the air, and also catch microorganisms that can make people sick.

Does the furnace run when the AC is on? ›

Your furnace and air conditioner should operate independently of each other.

Is HVAC better than furnace? ›

While it's true that electric furnaces are horribly inefficient at heating a home, electric heat pumps are—by far—the most efficient HVAC system on the market today.) Okay! That's how heat pumps vs furnaces work.

Does HVAC control heat and air? ›

Simply put, the air conditioning part of your heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) system chills refrigerant (with an outside unit) while the furnace works inside with fans and coils. The HVAC system's ductwork transports air throughout the home, heating or cooling your home as needed.

Which mode is best for AC in winter? ›

The standard air conditioner's temperature should be set around 18 to 22 degrees under Heat Mode for heating in winter. This is to ensure maximum energy efficiency from your unit. The Fan speed of the AC should be kept between Low to Medium.

Can I use my AC as a heater? ›

Does air conditioning heat as well as cool? This depends on the particular unit you have installed in your home. If your AC is also designed to work as a heat pump, then you can use your existing unit to heat your space too. If you've got an HVAC system, this also indicates that your aircon has a heating ability.

Can we use AC in winter for heating? ›

Your AC can heat the room in winter only if it has a reverse cycle function or a heat pump. This allows it to switch from cooling to heating mode and transfer heat from outside to inside. A cooling-only AC cannot heat the room in winter.

Why is my house getting colder with the heat on? ›

This problem often points to inadequate circulation of warm air. It could be due to blocked vents, a failing HVAC fan, or issues with the furnace itself. Ensure that furniture or drapes are not blocking your vents. Also, check if your furnace's filter is clean, as a dirty filter can restrict airflow.

Why is my house hotter than the thermostat setting in winter? ›

Check the Temperature Sensor

When the sensor isn't working correctly, it may cycle on and off randomly between proper activation periods causing your home to be either too hot or too cold due to the thermostat switching on and off before the correct temperature is met.

How do you calculate HVAC? ›

Calculate the square footage of each room by multiplying the width by the height. Add up the square footage of each room to get the total square footage served by the HVAC system. Multiply that figure by 20 to get the base BTU load requirement. Divide the BTU load requirement by 12 to get the tonnage.

How is math used in HVAC? ›

Yes, HVAC does require a certain amount of math. HVAC professionals need to use mathematical concepts for various tasks such as calculating heating and cooling loads, determining the size of HVAC equipment, measuring airflow, and understanding the principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.

How does HVAC work step by step? ›

In a typical forced air system, a heating element warms the air and the blower blows it into the duct system for distribution throughout the home. If the AC is running, the outdoor unit pulls warm air in, passes it over coils where the refrigerant cools it further, and then blows the cold air into the home.
