Upgrade Priorities (2024)

DO NOT RUSH YOUR TOWN HALL!

Now thats out of the way, we can talk about the best way to upgrade your base that will give you the best chance to win at the next TH level and have the most fun playing at the same time.

DO NOT RUSH YOUR TOWN HALL! This is the biggest mistake that most players make in the game, and it often the reason for all the abandoned bases we see while raiding. Players will upgrade their town hall to get some cool new building or defense before maxing out everything. When a player does this, it puts them at a huge disadvantage. The Loot Penalty the Supercell has built into the game will make it nearly impossible to raid enough loot to upgrade their base, stronger player will raid them for all their loot having no problem doing so since their defensive buildings are weak, they will get frustrated and quit, or start a new base. So, the best advice we can give you is to max everything out in your base BEFORE upgrading to your next TH level. All troops, all buildings, and especially all defensive structures. Even walls 🙂

After you have maxed everything on your base, begin your TH upgrade, then start farming right away to fill your elixir and gold storages (dark elixir, just get as much as you can). The reason for this is so that once your TH upgrade finished, you immediately have gold and elixir to spend.

Lastly,… get 5 builders if you can. If you dont want to spend the $$ to get that 5th builder, at least have 4. It makes upgrading much smoother.

Base upgrade priorities/rules:

Once your TH finishes, the first step before you start upgrading it to get all the new buildings from your new TH level (buildings, walls, traps, everything). This is so you can spend time on a new base design while your upgrades are going. Dont upgrade the new stuff right away, just get them out of the shop and onto your base at level 1. Below are the upgrade priorities, you should try these in this order:

  1. Laboratory, Spell Factory, Clan Castle, First Troop upgrade
    1. If you have the gems and elixir available, gem complete your Lab and start the first troop right away. Not only will this speed up things, it will also spend down your elixir so your not raided for it.
  2. Barracks, Army Camps, Heros (
    1. For example, if your going from TH7 to TH8, you will be graduating from the Mass dragon attack in war to the much stronger GoWiPe. But to use GoWiPe you need to upgrade your Dark Barracks twice at TH8 and Barracks once just to get the new troops.
    2. Also, 20 more troops at each TH makes a huge difference in war and regular raiding. Get those camps up right away.
  3. Splash damage defenses (mortar, wizard towers)
    1. These are the most important defenses in the game. Get them going right away.
  4. Point damage defenses (Air Defense, Hidden Tesla, Archer Towers, Cannons)
  5. Traps, bombs, etc.
  6. Any remaining buildings
    1. Storages, gold mines, elixir collectors, DE drills, DE storage.
  7. All remaining troops
    1. Your troops should really be upgrading all the time during the upgrades listed above. You don’t need a builder free to upgrade a troop, so have your lab working all the time.
  8. Walls

TIPS:

  • As you can see from the priorities above, once you get your troop upgrades out of the way, the major upgrades are your defenses, these will take you the most time, but they are also the most important. To be effective in war, you need good war troops to gain stars, but you also need good defenses so your base does not give up stars.
  • ALWAYS have your labratory working. You dont need a free builder for this. But make sure your always upgrading something. Your troop upgrade priorities will vary from TH to TH. Generally you want start on a strong war troop right away (dragons, pekkas, lava hounds, etc). After that, get your general raiding troops (Archers, Barbarians, wallbreakers, goblins, giants)
  • ALWAYS have your builders busy.
  • When upgrading from TH6 to TH7, get your King asap.
  • When upgrading from TH8 to TH9, make sure to have 40k Dark Elixir saved up to get your Archer Queen right away. She makes a HUGE difference in raiding and war.
  • If you are looking to save DE for a Hero upgrade, work on your walls. This is something to do *after* you have finished all other upgrades, because it will take you a long time. It is also a great time to work on your Barch raiding. As you earn gold/elixir, immediatly use it on your walls, keeping your storages empty. The DE that you earn from raids and your drills will slowly build up your DE storage for Hero upgrades (or Dark troop upgrades). Make sure your TH is outside your walls in farming mode. With no gold/elixir to raid, another player will rarely attack you for DE when there is no gold or elixir to come along with it, it’s just not worth it to them. So, if your trying to save DE and having a tough time, work on your walls!
