US Open payout distribution 2024: Purse, winner's prize money (2024)

Following in the footsteps of two fantastic majors this year already, the 124th US Open was set to be the latest major championship to produce an enthralling finish. The esteemed Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, hosted its fourth US Open and the year's third major championship. Ten years on from Martin Kaymer's memorable win here in 2014, one of the game's greatest venues was set to witness the next US Open champion write their name in the history books.

A host of golf's biggest names found themselves in contention heading into Moving Day at the 2024 US Open, including the immensely talented Ludvig Aberg, who held the lead going into the third round. However, a few costly mistakes were made on the back nine by Aberg during the third round, which opened the door for a host of players to make their charge up the leaderboard. While Aberg signed for a 3-over 73 and was certainly not out of the running, it was 2020 US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau who made a significant move to take control at the top.

Last month's runner-up at the PGA Championship, continued to thrill the fans with another phenomenal showing, this time in the US Open. In search of his second major, Bryson produced one of the rounds of the day at an opportune time. His 3-under 67 was his second of the week and was good enough to ensure he would take the lead into the final round of the 124th US Open.

DeChambeau would not only look to emulate childhood hero Payne Stewart and win his second US Open at Pinehurst No. 2, just as Stewart famously did in 1999, but also become just the 23rd player in US Open history to have won on multiple occasions. And just the fifth player since WWII to do so at the age of 30 or younger, per Justin Ray.

Four players since WWII have won a second U.S. Open title at age 30 or younger - Jack Nicklaus, Ernie Els, Tiger Woods and Brooks Koepka.

While DeChambeau would attempt to join an elite group of players with a US Open victory at Pinehurst No. 2, a handful of others, including Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Matthieu Pavon, Hideki Matsuyama, and Ludvig Aberg, were within striking distance of the lead going into the final round and were looking to write their own story in a US Open at Pinehurst.

Whether it was Bryson or one of the chasing pack, whoever emerged triumphant would become immortalized with the greats of the game and walk away with a massive winner's share of the 124th US Open's record-breaking prize purse. How much was at stake at the year's third major? Let's take a look at the full purse breakdown, winner's prize money, and payout distribution for the field at Pinehurst No. 2 this week.

The purse for the 124th edition of the US Open is set at a record-breaking $21.5 million for 2024, making it the biggest prize purse in major championship history after the announcement that they were increasing the purse was made by USGA CEO Mike Whan earlier in the week. The record-breaking increase in prize money ensures the US Open will offer the second-largest purse of the season to date, only behind THE PLAYERS Championship purse, and ahead of this year's other majors, signature events on the PGA Tour, and LIV Tour purses. In addition to the US Open's record-breaking purse for 2024, the 124th US Open will also reward its champion with a record-breaking $4.3 million in prize money. For comparison, here is a look at the last five US Opens and what the winner has earned on each occasion.
