Visitors Notes of Guidance - Muirfield (2024)

Booking Information

Visitors’ Playing Days – We welcome visitors (minimum age 12) on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year . Visitors must have recognised handicaps of 24 or less and should bring with them certified handicap certificates as these may be required prior to play.

Conduct of Visitors- We appreciate the opportunity to welcome visitors to the HCEG where we hope they will be able to enjoy not only the course but also the atmosphere and tradition of the Club. We expect and require the same standards of behaviour from visitors as we do from our members. While present at HCEG visitors must remain courteous and considerate in their interactions with all members of staff, members and other visitors, whether on the course or elsewhere on Club premises. Under no circ*mstances should a visitor ever address any form of criticism or complaint to a member of staff. In the unlikely event that a visitor considers that they have grounds for any criticism or complaint this should be addressed to the Secretary or Assistant Secretary. Where an issue arises with respect to luncheon a visitor may address their concern to the Manager on duty. This must be done calmly and considerately. Under no circ*mstances will the Club tolerate the use of foul or offensive language. In the case of any perceived misbehaviour by a visitor, of which the Secretary or Assistant Secretary shall be the sole judge, the visitor and the group with whom he or she is booked, will require to immediately vacate the Club premises. That will apply whether or not they have already been on the course. If such exceptional circ*mstances do arise there will be no reimbursem*nt of any fees paid to the Club.

Bookings – When making a booking, please provide a list of the names and handicaps of all players. Payment of green fees is required, in full, before that booking can be confirmed. Thereafter, any changes to names of the visitors will not be permitted, unless agreed otherwise by the Secretariat. Bookings will not be taken for threeballs, two-balls or singles. Group bookings are restricted to no more than 12 players on these days. Most leading credit cards are accepted for the payment of green fees, except for Diners’ Card.

Cancellation Policy – In the event of a cancellation, green fees will only be refunded if the Club can re-sell the cancelled time(s). Green fees are non-refundable/transferable except in the event of the course being closed for play; which decision will be taken by the Course Manager, in his absolute discretion

Play On The Course – Play will be in Fourballs in the morning and Foursomes (Alternate shot) in the afternoon.

Muirfield is a walking course with a strong caddie program. Caddies are available, if requested at least 24 hours in advance, and their fee is £70.00 for one round or £120.00 for two, exclusive of gratuity. They do not ‘double bag’; the Caddie will carry one bag and look after one golfer. Only ‘Muirfield’ Caddies will be permitted onto the course, and no spectators are allowed.

We have two buggies available for hire at £40.00 per round; these are allocated on a first come first serve basis, and made available only to those who would not otherwise be able to play golf. Before using a buggy at Muirfield, a golfer must read and sign a Safety Policy Acknowledgement Form, a sample copy of which can be accessed below. Pull trolleys are available free of charge.

Spectators – no spectators are permitted to accompany visitors who are playing.

Prices – All prices are stated to be inclusive of VAT where applicable and are correct at time of going to print.

Data Protection – Any personal data provided when submitting a request for a booking will be used by us solely to process and respond to the request.

Getting to / Arriving at Muirfield – Travelling around Scotland, a small country in comparison to many, is relatively straightforward, but past experience has shown that visitors do not allow sufficient time to get to Muirfield and often arrive late. To help you with your planning, we have provided some guidance below:

St Andrews to Muirfield – The journey from the St Andrews area to Muirfield is approximately 90 miles / 2 hrs without traffic.

Turnberry area to Muirfield – From the Turnberry / Troon area, approximately 113 miles / 2hrs 50mins without traffic.

Edinburgh Airport to Muirfield– From Edinburgh Airport, approximately 30 miles / 45mins without traffic.

NB. You should be aware that from 6.00am onwards, the heavy volume of vehicles using the major roads, in particular the Forth Road Bridge, M9 from Glasgow and the Edinburgh City Bypass, is likely to lead to traffic congestion, therefore please allow sufficient time for a safe journey.

To get to Muirfield, follow the Edinburgh City bypass and take the route signposted A1 to Berwick upon Tweed. Follow that until you come to the turn off signposted A198 to North Berwick, which will take you through Longniddry, Aberlady and into Gullane. Muirfield is on Duncur Road, the last road on the left exiting Gullane. (Follow the signage for Greywalls Hotel). Drive down Duncur Road at a safe speed and please stop for our staff. They will direct you to the parking area appropriate to your vehicle size and our Visitor Services Team will thereafter assist you to the course.

Please do not arrive at Muirfield before 7.30am.

There is no catering available in the clubhouse in the morning, however, you may be able to obtain breakfast in either Greywalls Hotel (next to the course) or in Gullane village.

Locker Room – There are no individual lockers for use by Visitors. If you have any items that require secure storage, please speak to a Member of our Staff who will assist you.

Mobile Phones / Cameras – The use of mobile phones, or any other portable device used for the purposes of electronic communication, is prohibited anywhere on Club property. Should you wish to use the camera function on a mobile phone, the device must be switched to aircraft mode. Photography is NOT permitted anywhere in the clubhouse.

Golf Clubs – Please note that we do not facilitate clubs sent by courier, either in or out of Muirfield.

Smoking Ban – The Club complies with the Non-Smoking Regulations and smoking is prohibited in the club’s buildings.

Practice facilities – A full driving range, chipping area and putting green are available for your use, prior to play. Complimentary practice balls are provided.

Pace of Play – At Muirfield, we are committed to a pace of play of 4 hrs 10mins for 18 holes, which will ensure that everyone enjoys playing the course in a reasonable time. You can help us achieve this by playing from the tees that suit your ability, and always being ready to play when it is your turn. If your group is approached by a club employee about pace of play, please, as a courtesy to everyone else, do whatever is necessary to maintain your place on the course and keep up with the group in front of you.

Adverse Weather – There is no weather warning system at Muirfield, and Visitors who choose to remain on the course in adverse weather conditions, particularly during thunder and lightning (which is very rare) do so at their own risk.

Lunch -Lunch is available only to those playing golf. We have a 3-course carvery lunch offered to those playing 36-holes which is included in the package price. Or, we have a 2-course carvery lunch (£30.00 pp) offered to those playing 18-holes. Please note the last sitting for our 2-course lunch is 5pm. Dress code apply in the Club’s public rooms – Jacket and Tie for Gentleman and smart / casual (no golf clothing) for Ladies. The bar closes at 8.00pm during the Summer months and 5.00pm from 01 November during the Winter months.

Gratuities – We value our staff and they are encouraged and trained to provide the best possible service to our guests. If you wish to show your appreciation, any gratuity should be left at the reception desk in the Dining Room and it will be added to the Staff Fund.
