The first letters of “New Orleans” and the state abbreviation for Louisiana, LA, combine to derive the nickname “NOLA.
Put those together and you get N.O.LA or NOLA.
Residents and visitors commonly use this shorthand or acronym to refer to the city. The creation of nicknames or acronyms for cities is a widespread practice. I serves as a convenient and colloquial way to refer to a place.
In New Orleans’ case, “NOLA” has gained wide recognition. It is frequently used in tourism, local culture, and popular media.
Ragin Cajun's Local Insights
The mighty Mississippi River borders New Orleans to the south. The shores of Lake Pontchartrain border it to the north,. This gives the city its distinctive crescent shape.
The New Orleans metropolitan area includes New Orleans itself on the lake’s south side, along with the suburbs of Metairie and Kenner in Jefferson Parish and the parishes of St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and Washington on the lake’s north side.
The world’s longest bridge, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, spans the lake, crossing 24 miles of open water!
People living on the lake’s south side identify as being from New Orleans, while those on the other side consider themselves from the “North Shore.”
Residents on the lake’s north side often talk about the North Shore (where they live) and refer to New Orleans as simply “South Shore.”

What an amazing experience! We vacation in Alabama every few years and take a day trip to New Orleans. This time the kids wanted to do a swamp tour. (adult children who still vacation on our dime lol) This was probably one of the coolest experiences we have ever had, and I’ve jumped out of an airplane, so that’s saying something. Our guide was amazing and an alligator practically climbed on the boat! I will 1000 percent do this tour again the next time we visit! Can’t recommend this company enough!

While on vacation in Dauphin Island, AL… we booked the Ragin Cajun swamp tour for our family and drove the 2.5 hours to New Orleans. Didn’t really know what to expect. Holy cow… we were blown away!!! This tour was just amazingly fun. The folks at Ragin Cajun are the real deal. 😀👍 Had a gator 🐊 crawl onto the boat and learned a lot about wildlife and the swamp from our young guide. It was awesome! I would recommend taking the time to book a tour with these folks to anyone. The kids had as much fun as the adults. Great time and a great company.
