Why Sonic The Hedgehog Turns Yellow In Sonic 2 (2024)

Warning: SPOILERS forSonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic the Hedgehog turns yellow during the ending ofSonic the Hedgehog 2, bringing his iconic Super Sonic form to the movie franchise. Paramount increased the connections to the video games in the sequel to 2020's hitSonic the Hedgehog film. The 2022 follow-up featured Tails in a bigger role after a post-credits introduction, but it also featured the debut of Sonic's rival Knuckles, the Master Emerald, and much more. Even beforeSonic the Hedgehog 2's final surprise video game connection, the movie delivered another big moment for gamers when Sonic turned yellow.

As shown in the final battle against Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik, Sonic emerges from a near-death experience with brand new powers. This comes as his traditionally blue quills turn yellow and begin glowing. Sonic's gold form includes giving him red eyes and turning the three large quills on his head upwards.Sonic the Hedgehog 2 replicated this design for the Blue Blur and showed off his increased powers. The Super Sonic form gives the hedgehog the ability of flight and super-strength, while he's also faster and nearly invincible. It is for that reason that he manages to rather quickly defeat Dr. Robotnik inSonic the Hedgehog 2's ending.

Sonic the Hedgehog's yellow form is a striking visual for the sequel to use, but the reason why Sonic turns yellow inSonic 2 is tied to the film's MacGuffin. Sonic and Tails are on a mission throughout the movie to find the Master Emerald, but they fail as Robotnik harnesses its power instead. After Sonic and Tails team up with Knuckles, they finally regain the Master Emerald, but it doesn't take long for it to break. This results in Sonic being exposed to the seven Chaos Emeralds inside. It is only after harnessing the power of these rare artifacts that Sonic turns gold and emerges in his Super Sonic form.

Why Sonic The Hedgehog Turns Yellow In Sonic 2 (1)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 confirms that Sonic's yellow form makes him the most powerful being in the universe, but that type of power is only temporary. He can't always be Super Sonic, but the Blue Blur always has the opportunity to regain this form. Sonic can only become Super Sonic by collecting all seven of the Chaos Emeralds again. SinceSonic the Hedgehog 2 ended with them leaving Sonic's body and floating into the sky, it is unclear where they are now. However, the fact that they weren't definitively destroyed leaves the door open for Super Sonic's return.

The debut of Super Sonic in live-action comes at the same point as the video game franchise, as Sonic's yellow form was first unlocked in Sega'sSonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992. Due to the unlimited power that Sonic possesses as Super Sonic, it is often used by the heroic hedgehog in times of great crisis or adversity. FutureSonic the Hedgehog movies will likely continue to limit the use of Super Sonic, as he'll be too powerful for most villains otherwise. But since Shadow the Hedgehog is seemingly on the way forSonic the Hedgehog 3, there's a chance Super Sonic could return in the sequel.
