Ewan Roy is a major character in the HBO TV series, Succession. He is Logan's estranged older brother and Greg's grandfather who resides in Canada. He personally despises Logan and his business empire, but stops short of actively working against his brother. Unlike the other Roys, he's the most honorable member of the Roy family.
He is portrayed by James Cromwell.
Early life[]
Ewan Roy is the older brother of Logan Roy, and was born into humble circ*mstances in Dundee, Scotland, before the Second World War. Ewan and Logan grew up in poverty with their younger sister, Rose. Their widowed mother decided to send them to be raised in Quebec, Canada. There they were raised by Uncle Noah with a print shop and a few advertising billboards, and an aunt with a herd of cattle.
Logan has claimed their Uncle Noah was ill-tempered and viciously abusive. Whether or not this is true has never been commented on or contested by Ewan. If it is true, it's presumable that he would have been abused the same way his brother had been. Their sister Rose died young, and although the exact circ*mstances of her death aren't confirmed, Ewan has been seen telling Logan that Rose's death was not his fault. Logan blames himself for Rose's death, but Ewan seems to hold no grudge with Logan for what happened to Rose, which seems significant considering he appears to take exception with almost everything else Logan says or does.
Personality[]
Ewan is morally righteous of the Roy family, but he's cold, callous and not a warm or nurturing person at all. He isolated his younger brother Logan while they were growing up and partially leading him to become what he is now, and showing a similarly callous and intolerant attitude towards Greg, alternating between barely acknowledging him or showing any concern for him and giving him stern lectures, eventually cutting him off entirely and pushing him more into the arms of Logan. However, he is the only one in the family to care about the effects of the news and have seemingly any ideals he puts above wealth.
