Defense is typically an afterthought in fantasy drafts — often rightfully so due to the volatility associated with defensive scoring, making fading defense an unwritten rule for a successful fantasy team.

#2: Never Draft More Than One DST

I know the above stats may have you thinking, “Maybe I should draft two defenses to improve my chances of landing the top defense.” My answer to that would be a pretty simple, “No.”

Beyond that, the most common sources of negative scoring are turnover plays: interceptions (INTs) and fumbles. The number of points removed can vary by league. INTs most commonly cost a QB something in the range of 1-3 points. A fumble is usually only counted if the fumbling team loses the ball to the other team.

Most managers will elect to wait until the much later rounds of a fantasy draft before even considering selecting a defensive unit. While the top ones will often be selected in the middle rounds, solid production can be found late.

What about defense touchdown and special teams scoring? For special teams, like kickoff or punt return touchdowns, the Any Time or First Touchdown props only count for the player who crosses the goal line. For defenses, an interception return or fumble return touchdown counts as a Defense score as the entire unit.

Standard games have the same scoring format available during league creation: Head-to-Head: Points. This is the most commonly used scoring format in fantasy football. In a Head-to-Head points league, your team plays against another team each week, per the league's schedule.

Numbers make the fantasy football world go 'round. Besides the most obvious way -- numbers are what determine our weekly matchups and, ultimately, our league champions -- it's those very digits that often give us precious insight into particular players, teams and positions (pertaining to draft and lineup strategy).

Red generally denotes that an opposing team doesn't give up a lot of points against that position. For example, if you are starting a RB against a team that's listed in the red, that team doesn't give up a lot of fantasy points to running backs. They likely have a good rushing defense.
