Parcel lockers are used to store and deliver a wide range of goods. The security of items placed in the parcel lockers is the thing of utmost importance for the clients and the companies operating the parcel locker networks. How to keep the package safe, prevent thefts and damages? In this blog post, we’ll shed the light on mechanisms, technologies, and software that make parcel terminals secure.
Digital locks
Digital locks are first on the list of hardware components that make parcel locker secure. Such locks are typically operated using a unique card or code granted to the customer or maintenance staff. Digital locks are more secure than traditional locks because it’s much more difficult to pick or bypass them. They are opened by means of an electric impulse after entering the code on the touchscreen display or control panel. It ensures that only authorized individuals can access the locker compartment and its contents.
Surveillance cameras
Another important security feature of parcel lockers is 24/7 video surveillance. CCTV cameras are often installed to monitor activity and prevent unauthorized access. High-quality cameras that provide clear images can be used to identify anyone who attempts to tamper with the lockers or steal packages. The type of surveillance cameras installed at a parcel locker terminal depends on a variety of factors and may involve a combination of different camera types and technologies to provide the best security of parcel terminal compartments.
Alarming systems
Alarming system at the outdoor parcel terminal is always the combination of advanced sensors, reliable communication channels, and software that can analyse data and generate alerts. It helps prevent accidents and minimize damage in case of an emergency. For example, the integrated fire alarm system quickly detects smoke or flames and activates the sprinkler systems and other fire suppression measures.
Access codes
Modern parcel terminals can be equipped with the QR code scanners, so digit codes may be substituted with more secured technology. The QR code is sent to the customer's email or mobile device. To retrieve the package, the person simply scans it and the system opens the necessary compartment. Such QR codes are compatible with most mobile devices and can be scanned using the device's camera.
Biometric technologies
Parcel locker manufacturers also implement biometric technologies into their devices. Such technologies use facial recognition or fingerprints to verify the identity of the parcel recipient. It ensures that only authorized individuals can access the locker and its contents.
Radio-Frequency Identification technology
RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology is also used in some parcel lockers. An RFID tag is a small electronic device attached to the parcel or package. This technology uses radio waves to identify and track parcels, and it can be used to monitor the location of parcels within the locker.
Tamper-proof packaging
A simple but efficient solution adds a security layer to your package. This type of packaging prevents unauthorized access to the parcel and ensures that items being stored in the compartment are safe and secure. Tamper-proof packaging typically includes tamper-evident seals or labels.
Complex software solutions
Parcel network systems require complex software solutions for all parties of the delivery process. Delivery operators offer specified applications for tracking the parcel and operating the parcel lockers. We, at Mint Innovations, developed LOKO APP – a complex solution that benefits parcel locker operators, maintenance personnel, and parcel receivers. The cloud-based dashboard allows remote parcel locker management: open\close\block compartments, generate access codes, intrusion alerts, set up notifications, track parcel operations, etc.
Security was always the major concern for clients and companies operating parcel locker networks. A set of hardware and software solutions covered in this blog post is only the edge of the iceberg. Companies must constantly update their security policies and keep up with the most recent security measures in the quickly evolving digital environment. Investing in advanced safety mechanisms is always the key point for gaining trust and customer loyalty. Stay tuned for our blog updates!
