Will the proctor have any form of access to my computer or my personal files?
The role of the proctor is simply to ensure students take the exam in a supervised setting – ensuring that students do not undertake any activity that is not related to taking the exam. To perform this role, the proctor will have access to view your entire computer screen.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties, the proctormay need to take control of the mouse and keyboard (similar to what happens in a remote support call) to assist you. If this occurs, you will be asked to provide permission to the proctor first, and you will be able to see what they are doing on your screen. You can terminate their control at any time.
Students’ rights are protected through the contractual arrangement between The University of Adelaide and ProctorU. There is no rootkit (software that provides continued privileged access to a computer while actively hiding its presence) or keylogger (software that tracks or logs the keystrokes on a computer) or similar installed.
Proctors have the ability to view the screen and utilize the mouse and keyboard as if they were sitting next to you. Once the exam starts, your proctor will monitor everything on the computer screen, but can no longer utilise your mouse and keyboard. During the exam session, a chat box is running on your computer and you can see what permissions the proctor currently has at any time. The entire chat session log is saved, including a permanent record of what actions the proctor took while accessing your computer.
