For veterans of the Monster Hunter series, finishing the game is only the beginning. That’s because the end of the story is when the hunt truly begins as folks take the long and arduous journey of raising their master rank and reaching that far and lofty goal of MR 100, which is required to unlock all the secret hidden monsters of the game.
In-depth review:I played Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak for over 150 hours. Here are my thoughts
By the way, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a special thanks to my co-worker Cameron Duren, who helped me by basically no-lifing the game during the review period and reaching Master Rank 100 once again, just like he did with Iceborne. The best I could do was just under Master Rank 50 on my account due to work. Well, that and having to get Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak videos ready for YouTube as well as articles and guides for this site.

Yeah, excuses, excuses.
In case you’re curious, it took him a little over 130 hours to reach Master Rank 100 by essentially speed running the game. Of that, 40 hours came from playing base Rise from the beginning again since he played that game on Switch instead of PC, just like me, and it took me about that long to rush through base Rise again as well.
Rushing actually made things a bit tougher because it meant we were fighting endgame monsters without good Decorations for our armor. In fact, I was rushing through Sunbreak as well so I ended up using a mix of early and mid-game armor when fighting the last boss as well as the post-game monsters. Not recommended.
On that note, here are all the main endgame monsters for Sunbreak. Please be warned that legit hardcore spoilers are coming up next. Granted pretty much all of these have been teased before release but if you’re the type to avoid trailers and leaks, then turn around and walk away right now. Images were also taken via screenshots.
How to unlock Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak’s last boss Gaismagorm
At the top of the list of Sunbreak’s end-game monsters is the game’s last boss, he-who-shall-not-be-named. No, it’s not Voldemort. The monster just has a name that is hard to pronounce. I’m talking about you, Gaismagorm.
However way you pronounce its name, you’ll need to beat the monster to raise your Master Rank cap up to MR 10.
To unlock Gaismagorm, you will need to go through all your key quests at Master Rank 5. Gaismagorm will then pop up as your Urgent Quest to reach Master Rank 6. Gaismagorm’s mission is called “Proof of Courage,” which is a nice homage to the series’ epic main theme song.
By the way, I remember Monster Hunter localization names being based on certain terms depending on the monster’s type and qualities. I believe “gaisma” means damage and “gorm” means sponge. Now that I’ve put it on the Internet, this means it’s true.
How to unlock Master Rank Winged Serpent Ibushi in Sunbreak
After beating Gaismagorm, you will be able to raise your Master Rank cap all the way to MR 10. Reach that level to fight an Arzuros suffering from a sickness called the Anomaly. Beat the resulting Urgent Quest, “Anomaly Research: Arzuros,” and you will unlock 1-star Anomaly quests against infected monsters. More importantly, you can now go past Master Rank 10.
Reach MR 20 and you will unlock the Urgent Quest, “Retribution,” for the next endgame monster on the list, the Winged Serpent Ibushi.
Hey, I know you!
With Rampages now gone, you will have to fight the monster normally. Just make sure to take advantage of the siege weapons when they become available. This includes using ballista to explode the floating cannonballs around him when he starts levitating stuff in the middle of the field. This is also a great time to hit him with the Splitting Wyvernshot cannon by the big wall when it’s available to make sure that it hits for massive, giant enemy crab damage. Or giant enemy elder dragon.
Anyway, this now allows you to go past MR 20 and also unlocks 2-star Anomaly quests. Level up your rank to unlock the next post-game monster.
How to unlock Master rank Narwa the Allmother in Sunbreak
You can’t have Beavis without Butthead and you can’t have Ibushi without Narwa. OK, maybe not the best comparison but you know what I mean. To unlock Narwa the Allmother, you will need to reach Master Rank 30 in Sunbreak. Once you do, her Urgent Quest, “Spine-Tingling Divinity” wil unlock.
All I can say is, watch out for her tail. Seriously, this fight swings from comfy and easy for the most part to two-shot wombo combo hell in the final few minutes of the hunt. Yeah, you probably thought you had her in the first half, not gonna lie, before everything goes south, literally, after that.
And it’s all because of that nasty tail slam.
I mean, I like lobster tail, Tails the Fox, Duck Tales, but absolutely loathe Narwa’s tail. This was the first time I legit failed a quest in Sunbreak, twice if I might add. I also didn’t cart once fighting the next three monsters in this list, by the way, but something about Narwa carted me six times.
Then again, that’s probably my fault for rushing through the story and fighting her with mostly beginner Master Rank mixed armor and without Dango Moxie unlocked. The lesson, as always is, I’m an idiot.
Anyway, beat Narwa and there will be much rejoicing in the heavens in your own mind. You will also unlock 3-star Anomaly quests as well as raise your Master Rank cap again, which can now go all the way to 50. Hmm, I wonder why…
How to unlock Furious Rajang in Sunbreak
Do enough quests to raise your Master Rank all the way to MR 50 and you will unlock Furious Rajang.
Because regular Rajang isn’t furious enough apparently. I mean, when is Rajang never mad?
Anyway, this faster and furiouser Rajang has no tail. You’d think that’s great news after all my complaining about Narwa’s tail but you’d be wrong. See, Rajang’s tail was one of its main weaknesses, so you needed to attack it to basically calm Rajang down from Super Saiyan mode. Plus, you know, Rajang’s tiny little tail doesn’t inflict massive damage on you unlike Narwa’s.
Anyway, whoever permanently cut this Rajang’s tail, though, probably regretted it and didn’t live to tell the tale, pun so totally intended, because it made this monkey all amped up and electrified all the time. Well, I guess technically this Rajang is an ape now because it has no tail. See? I was actually paying attention in biology class.
How to unlock Crimson Glow Valstrax in Sunbreak
Reach Master Rank 70 in Sunbreak and you will unlock the Top Gun of Monster Hunter’s skies, Crimson Glow Valstrax.
Yeah, you won’t find this guy playing volleyball at the beach with lowered nets and Kenny Loggins music playing in the background, that’s for sure. I could see Valstrax buzzing towers, though, due to the many close calls I had with its pointy, pokey wings. If you think you’re far enough not to get hit by its wings, well, I recommend moving even farther than that. This monster can enter the Olympics for fencing with its excellent reach.
My buddy Cameron hates fighting this guy, by the way. This monster was also the one that made one of my cousins quit playing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate after triple carting with Moxie activated, only for me to land the finishing blow high up its nest while said cousin was on his way back to camp on a kitty cart. Let’s just say he didn’t make it back in time to carve it, after which he said “I’m done.”

How to unlock Scorned Magnamalo in Sunbreak
Say hello to the final Master Rank-based monster unlock for base Sunbreak, Scorned Magnamalo. Like Aretha Franklin, all it really wants apparently is some R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
To unlock Scorned Magnamalo, all you need to do is reach Master Rank 100.
Yeah, easier said than done. To raise your rank, my buddy Munesiriou recommends fighting Gaismagorm, who he was beating in 9 to 10 minutes with a Light Bowgun and gives nice experience in the process for leveling up.
So what is Scorned Magnamalo like?
Well, like a lover, hell hath no fury like a Magnamalo scorned and this version of the rampaging monster is always in its hellfire mode. That being said, this was my favorite fight of all the endgame monsters because it has nice balance in terms of challenge. Scorned Magnamalo is certainly tough but also fair, which is the best kind of monster that I enjoy fighting. Even though it apparently just got dumped by its significant other.
