OVpay. The new way of checking in and out (2024)

Check in and out with your debit card, credit card or mobile. In the bus, tram, metro and train.

How it works

Exactly the same as your OV-chipkaart! You don't have to sign up beforehand. Simply hold your card or phone to the card reader and you're all checked in. Make sure you always use the same device or contactless card to check in and out – this will help you pay the right fare. For example, don't check in with a phone and check out with a smartwatch or contactless card.

We automatically charge your account at the end of the day. You'll recognise our transactions on your bank statement by a payment reference starting with NLOV. Want to view jour journeys? That's what the OVpay travel overview or the OVpay app is for.

Before you check in

  • Switch on contactless payments.
  • Make sure you have sufficient funds or credit card balance.
  • If you're checking in with a card, take it out of your wallet completely before holding it to the card reader. This will prevent the card reader from accidentally scanning the wrong card, which may cause you to pay the wrong fee.

Good to know

  • If you’d rather check in and out another way – no problem! You can keep using your trusty OV-chipkaart or (e-)ticket.
  • At the moment you can only travel with OVpay without a subscription and in 2nd class.
  • Kids can check in and out with OVpay if they have a contactless card. Little ones up to 4 years old always travel free of charge.
